The Challenge.

Each day people who are print handicapped have trouble doing what most Australians take for granted: reading newspapers, magazines, books and other printed materials, which means they lack access to important information. It is estimated that 15% of people have difficulty reading print and that only 3% of printed information is accessible to them.

Radio One RPH uses the medium of radio and the skills of volunteers to read printed information over the radio. Radio One RPH turns print into sound so that people who cannot read print have access to newspapers, books, magazines and the vast array of information available in print.

Our Listeners.

Radio 1RPH listeners include:-

People who are blind or vision impaired, have had a stroke, have paraplegia, quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, arthritis or multiple sclerosis, dyslexia or who otherwise have difficulty reading English or may have never learned to read. In short, people who cannot read print or manipulate a printed page.

Our Programs.

On Radio One RPH, you can listen to morning and evening readings of newspapers, book and magazine readings, theme programs on issues such as gardening, health, finance, travel, computing and current affairs, programs of special interest to people who are print handicapped, Christian programs and programs sourced from the BBC and Radio Deutsche Welle.

Running the Radio .

Volunteers contribute 12,000 hours each year to on-air reading, production and administration. Running the Station costs over $120,000.00 each year. Funding from ACT and Commonwealth Governments, together with fund-raising, donations, membership and sponsorships, helps meet our operating costs.

Additional funds would be used to provide a better radio service for our print handicapped listeners. We would use the funds to help meet the increasing day to day operation costs of running the radio station, including the replacement and upgrading of studio and broadcasting equipment and maintenance of studios to continue to provide a safe working environment for our volunteers.
